Can I Do P90X in My Apartment?
Can I do P90X in my apartment?
The quick answer is Yes, you can absolutely do P90X in your apartment with a couple of caveats. First I would suggest you read my post “How much space do you need to do P90X“? This post will probably clarify everything for you but there are a few other things you should not over look when living in an apartment.
Dumbbells or resistance bands?
If you are on the second floor or above then this is something you will have to consider. During a work out like P90X Back and Biceps you will be doing a lot of curls and you will be putting down and picking up the dumbbells quite often. Towards the end you might not be able to set them down nice and gently and therefore your neighbors below you will probably take you off their favorite person’s list. If you decide to use resistance bands instead of the dumbbells then you will not have to worry about this. Personally, I like the dumbbells but it is up to you.
How high are your ceilings?
This usually isn’t a problem but it is something to consider since you will be doing some jumping during P90X Plyometrics. You don’t want to find your head in the middle of a ceiling fan. Also, when you are doing your pull ups you want to make sure there is enough room above your door frame for your head. 99% of the time this will not be a problem but it is just something to think about. I would also suggest reading “Do I really need a pull up bar when doing P90X“? In this post you will see how you can substitute the pull up bar with the resistance bands and the kit you need to attach the bands to your door. Personally I always say to get the pull up bar but the choice is yours.
Do you have carpet or hardwood floors?
Doing P90X Plyometrics and all of the others P90X work outs will eventually take their toll on your carpet. You don’t want to find yourself with extra charges for carpet since they will say that this is not normal wear and tear. You can always get the work out square mats that you can piece together and put on top of your carpet. These work great and I use them in the basement and do my work outs on them. I pieced together about an 8 x 10 section. If you are on tile or hard wood you should be just fine but once again be careful if you are using dumbbells. I would suggest some sort of padding or a piece of carpet to set them on.
Commitment
No matter where you live if, you commit to P90X you will have some great results. Stick to the plan for the full 90 days and be sure to follow the P90X nutrition plan. If you are wondering what to do after P90X check out “What’s next after P90X?
Nutrition
You will be pushing your body to the limit with P90X so it is very important to replenish it with as much nutrient dense food as possible. Following the nutrition plan will get you there but if you feel like you are having a hard time getting your veggies then you might want to look into Shakeology. Shakeology is a low calorie, nutrient dense shake that tastes like dessert.
Update: And now, as of spring 2015, you can now stream P90X, P90X2, P90X3, Insanity or many of the Beachbody workouts right to your tablet, phone, computer, Roku, Amazon Firestick or any internet connected device. Is there a way to substitute the jumping exercises with some different? I live in a 3rd floor apartment and this has been the exact reason why I haven’t been able to do p90x. I did the first session and realized that my neighbors were probably hating me just from doing jumping jacks. lol. Any tips would be cool. Thanks.
The only time you do jumping jacks is during the warm up so I would suggest to do anything else to warm up instead of jumping jacks. Also, there is a lot of jumping in plyometrics so you might have to go to the gym in your apartment with a lap top to do that workout. Or like Tony says “Land like a cat.”
I was just going through the DVDs and noticed that Plyo is ALL ABOUT jumping. An hour of pounding over my head would drive me mad as well. Have you figured out an alternative?
I guess if my complex allows for treadmills in apartments then I won’t feel that bad.
Thanks.
@level99: I just do cardio on my bike. I can’t do the cardio, the plyo, or the jumping jacks, otherwise my neighbors would report me.
As ridiculous as it sounds, the Jillian Michaels DVD (30 Day Shred, I think) doesn’t require as much jumping and is also a good workout on the highest level. I think it is for women, but whatever, it works.
Thanks Dan,
Plyo looks like something I actually need to do but I have also lived on ground floors and know how it is to have crappy upstairs neighbors.
There is no cardio that will make you look ‘manly’ while doing it lol so it is all good.
I appreciate you posting back.
BTW how is P90X treating you otherwise?
Thanks.
@level99 Like Tony says. “Land like a cat”. Then I am sure your neighbors won’t mind. Also, do you have a work out room in your complex. If so you can go there and pop the dvd into your laptop if you have one. The Plyometrics is a key calorie burning part of this program and I would suggest to try and fit in in and stick with it.
When I “land like a cat” in my 3rd floor apartment, it still shakes the complex. lol.
No, I don’t have a separate area for a fitness center. But it’s OK. There are ways around it.
@level99: P90X would be treating me better if it was not for my degree program getting in the way of my free time. But I’m sure it will treat me well in the future. 🙂
🙂 I was about the say the same…the whole cat landing is still an issue. Even walking is noticed in most apartments.
@Dan, yeah I hear you…working 50-60 hrs a week is also tough but I am still going for it.
Day 1 should be Monday 🙂
Thanks guys!
You really can’t. I decided to take a break from weights and try my wife’s P90X (which she never used yet). Today I started day 2 – plyometrics. Got halfway through the work out and decided I was making WAY too much noise with the jumps. I’m sure neighbors downstairs were not appreciating someone jumping up and down above them so I stopped. If we ever get a house again I might try it again but for now I’m back to the gym and running.
Well…I did 2 rounds of it no problem or complaints from the neighbors. Not so sure what you mean by ‘break from the weights’? You plan on using resistance bands? – I doubt they will keep you engaged after moving iron.
I adjusted and skipped some of the workouts or did my own variations
….that and the fact that after round 1 I had just about 20lbs less in weight to land :). Nowadays, I do partial workouts just before a game of basketball so you might try to incorporate it into your running day…cardio is cardio so who cares if you are not following the program 100%.
Good luck man.
